Houston's oldest Black real estate association — empowering professionals and building generational wealth for over 75 years.
The Houston Black Real Estate Association (HBREA), founded in 1949, is the local chapter of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB). NAREB, founded in 1947, is the oldest and largest minority trade association in America.
HBREA was founded on the principle that all citizens have the right to equal housing opportunities regardless of race, creed, or color.
Our mission is two-fold: to increase wealth in Black communities beginning with homeownership, and to elevate and empower Black real estate professionals. Because when we succeed, our communities succeed.
Eleven progressive real estate brokers, faced with discriminatory real estate practices, formed HBREA at the Negro Chamber of Commerce. The founders were: J.W. Hubert, J.E Robinson, J.W. Robinson Sr., E.J. Hardy, W.O. Bonner, W.W. Robinson, E.S. McCullough, O.J. Polk, Garfield Clark, Roscoe Cavitt, and S.D. Jones Sr.
The organization was incorporated and became the Houston Real Estate Association, Inc., formalizing its structure and expanding its reach.
Through cooperation with Texas Southern University, evening classes in Real Estate Principles, Salesmanship, Real Estate Brokerage, and Real Estate Law were sponsored by the Association, opening doors for aspiring Black real estate professionals.
A DBA was created for HBREA to do business as The Houston Black Real Estate Association, Inc., reflecting our heritage and mission.
With over 500 active members, HBREA continues to serve as the undisputed voice of Black real estate professionals in Houston, championing homeownership and economic empowerment.
The dedicated professionals leading HBREA's mission forward.
